JOURNAL SET 1: MULTI-MEDIA ENTRY

“The Lottery” is a short story written by Shirley Jackson. It was first published in the June 26, 1948. It is regarded today as one of the most famous short stories of American Literature. This video is adaptation of “The Lottery”
At the beginning of the video, Mr. Summers who draw one of the papers is seen. After, we see scenes about people gathering for lottery. Children collect stones and put the stones in their pocket. Men gather next and women follow them. Mr. Summers reads names. They come up and draw a slip of paper. Anyone doesn’t look at the paper until the lottery finishes. Afterwards, Mr. Summers finishes calling names. When everyone opens his/her papers, people find that Tessie has drawn the paper with the black point on it. Tessie says “It is not fair” but no one cares her. Villagers grab stones and run toward her. Everyone, even his son, throws stones at her.
I chose this video because of its theme. It is a good example that suggests how dangerous a tradition can be when people follow it blindly. Namely, villagers don’t really know much about origin of lottery. However they are insistent on preserving their cruel and nonsense tradition. Before we know what kind of a lottery it is, the villagers seem harmless. However, these people kill someone easily. Consequently,  blind acceptance of traditions can be dangerous.
